How to update Topdon MDCI driver?
If you’re using a Phoenix Max or Phoenix Smart Tool with the MDCI interface for J2534 programming, keeping the drivers up to date is essential for reliable diagnostics and programming performance. This guide walks you through a clear, hands-on process to update your MDCI interface.
Step 1: Prepare Your MDCI for an Internet Update
The first phase of the update is done without connecting to a computer. This ensures the device firmware is refreshed independently.
- Connect an Ethernet cable directly to the MDCI.
- Plug in the power adapter (the one that comes with your tablet works fine).
- Power on the device. The MDCI will automatically check for updates once it boots.
- Wait for the update to complete. The screen will display a “Ready for Diagnostics” message when finished.
- To confirm the update, go to Settings in the top-right corner and check the version number.

Step 2: Update Using the J2534 Suite on Your PC
After the standalone update, you’ll connect the MDCI to your computer to finalize driver synchronization.
- Disconnect the Ethernet cable, but leave the power connected.
- Connect the MDCI to your Windows PC using the USB cable.
- Open the J2534 Suite on your computer.
– Important: Always run the program as Administrator (right-click and select “Run as administrator”). - The software should detect your device. Verify that the serial number on the tool matches the one shown on the screen.
- Click Upgrade if prompted, and allow the process to complete.
- Once done, confirm that both the firmware and DLL versions are updated and match.

In sum:
J2534 Driver: Steps to Update
Update the MDCI Using Directly Connected Ethernet and Power FIRST.
Update the MDCI Using the J2534 Suite on Your Windows 10 PC.
Remember: Windows 10 is Required for J2534 Programming With Most OEMs !!
NOT WINDOWS 11. Most OEM software does not yet support Windows 11 for
programming purposes.
Regarding the J2534 update, it’s recommended to check the following information:
1.Check if the operating system of the computer is WIN10/11. Currently, the J2534 driver only supports WIN10/11.
2. Please disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it. Sometimes this helps the driver to recognize the serial number.
3.Please do not run OE software when updating J2534.
4. Key is the ethernet connection. This will not work over WIFI. Follow this method exactly and it will work.
5. Do not mix OEM software on the same partition. Installing Ford,
Mazda, GM, or other brand software on the same hard drive partition can
cause unresolvable conflicts. Use separate partitions or dedicated
laptops per brand if possible.
